Purpose and General

Nature of the Job:

The purpose of the Manager’s job is to manage technical work for clients on their list so that a top-quality service can be provided at an appropriate price.  In conjunction with other managers within the group/branch, they are expected to manage the people and the flow of work in support of group partners.


The Context: On specific client work the manager will manage the production of the work prior to a review by the partner responsible.


Main Duties: The main duties of a manager involve managing work for clients on their lists.

The work will involve:

·         planning, supervising, and reviewing work of more junior staff.

·         producing budgets for work done and draft bills for approval.

·         monitoring performance against plan.

·         undertaking technical work and being available to provide technical expertise.

·         ensuring technical excellence.

·         ensuring that WIP and billing targets are met.

For marketing activity, duties will include:

·         working with the group/branch partner to develop and implement marketing plans.

·         promoting the firm generally.

·         involvement in seminars and other activities.

·         developing professional relationships with referral sources.

·         actively selling additional services to clients.



Secondary Duties: These duties include:

·         liaising with managers in other groups/branches.

·         assisting with debt collection where necessary.

·         bringing to the attention of the firm technical matters which affect other groups/branches; and

·         such other duties in connection with the above which in the opinion of the partners is reasonable for the jobholder to perform.  The jobholder must adopt a flexible approach to their work and be willing to adapt to changing circumstances, i.e., new systems, new technology, etc.  Partners will ensure that appropriate training is provided to enable the jobholder to learn new skills and develop as individuals.


Responsibilities: Responsibility for targets:

Managers are responsible for assisting their partner to plan and achieve targets for the group/branch.


Responsibility for subordinates:

Managers are responsible for managing the staff that report to them to achieve effective teamwork within the office.    They are required to consider each person’s training and development and help them to achieve their full potential.


In conjunction with other managers this will involve:

·         planning and scheduling the work of staff.

·         operating the firm’s annual appraisal system and identifying training needs.

·         ensuring that their team has adequate ‘on the job’ training and gains the experience necessary for their development in all aspects of their work.

·         ensuring the firm’s administrative procedures are complied with by the group/branch members.


Individually this will involve:

·         planning, supervising, and reviewing work done by more junior members of staff.

·         providing feedback on performance.

·         ensuring that staff fulfil their duties in compliance with office procedures and standards on quality.

·         ensuring that any senior for whom they are responsible gains the experience necessary to develop their abilities and assume their own client list.

·         ensuring that staff are polite and courteous to clients.

authorising overtime or TOIL.

Responsibility for money:

Managers are responsible for authorising expenses claims for staff in relation to expenses rechargeable to clients for work done.


Responsibility for clients:

Managers are responsible for providing clients with a first-class service.  This involves:

·         identifying client’s needs.

·         being aware of all the services offered by our client and brining such services where relevant to their client’s attention.

·         agreeing timetables.

·         ensuring that the client’s requirements are met.


Working relationships: On client work the manager reports to the partner responsible for that client or job.  For general purposes managers report to the group/branch partner.


Relationships with partners: Managers may have to undertake work for any partner, and they should report problems relating to procedures and resources to their group/branch partner.


Relationships with colleagues and junior staff: Managers will attend the firm’s managers’ meetings and group meetings where workflow, scheduling, standard procedures, technical information, development of the firm, etc will be discussed.  They will organise similar meetings for their groups.


On client related work they will manage more junior staff within their group/branch and be available to them for consultation/technical support.  They will have a particular responsibility for the general management of staff within their area.  Managers will work closely with their staff and provide for their training and development.
